A PRIMARY HEALTHCARE PROVIDER
A doctor of chiropractic (D.C.) is a physician, a primary care initial contact physician, whose purpose, as a member of the healing arts, is to administer to the health needs of the public, while giving particular attention to the neurological, muscular, vascular and structural aspects of the human body.
The application of science in chiropractic concerns itself with the relationship between structure, primarily the spine, and function, primarily coordinated by the nervous system, of the human body; as that relationship may affect the restoration and preservation of health.
The chiropractic physician bases the treatment program upon a foundation of diagnostic information gathered through the patient’s history, physical examination, clinical laboratory results (blood chemistries, urinalysis, etc.), diagnostic imaging (x-rays, MRI’s, etc.) and other diagnostic measures called for by symptoms, as well as evaluations unique to chiropractic medicine.
The chiropractic physician may then care for the patient through, but not limited to, the application of a diversity of spinal and extravertebral adjustments and manipulations. Care may also include chiropractic physiological therapeutics, acupuncture, trigger point therapy, nutritional therapy, stress management, lifestyle counseling, and other appropriately related treatment regimes.
The foregoing represents a brief overview of the practice and scope of contemporary chiropractic. However, as in any other field of medicine, chiropractic is a dynamic healthcare discipline... never static... constantly changing and evolving to keep pace with sound, scientific principles and research.
As a conservative form of health care, chiropractic ultimately continues to emphasize and embrace the quality of life.
